What to do after water damage in your home

Water damage moves fast. Within minutes, water wicks into drywall, hardwood and cabinetry. Within 24 to 48 hours, mold can begin to grow. Acting quickly, and in the right order, is the difference between a simple drying job and a costly remediation.

1. Stop the source and stay safe

Shut off the main water valve if a pipe, supply line or appliance has failed. If water is near outlets or electrical panels, turn off power to the area at the breaker. Never walk through standing water near live electricity.

2. Call a certified mitigation firm

An IICRC certified technician uses thermal imaging and moisture meters to find water hidden behind walls and under floors. Fast Dry serves Orange County and Los Angeles 24/7 and aims to arrive within 90 minutes.

3. Document everything

Take photos and video of the affected areas and belongings before anything is moved. A professional mitigation firm will also record daily moisture readings, which your insurance adjuster will rely on.

4. Dry to a verified standard

Surfaces can feel dry while the materials underneath are still wet. Professional drying uses air movers, dehumidifiers and a psychrometric plan, and continues until readings confirm materials are back to normal levels.

5. Prevent mold

Wet materials that cannot be dried, such as saturated drywall or insulation, are removed and treated. Containment and HEPA filtration keep spores from spreading to clean areas of the home.

6. Plan the rebuild

Once the structure is dry and clean, your contractor can start repairs. Fast Dry only performs mitigation and remediation, so you're free to choose any rebuild contractor you trust.
